Two masked robbers burst into Greggs bakery in Wednesbury and threatened to hurt female staff unless they handed over cash.

The men were dressed in decorators' overalls and had their faces almost completely covered when they went into the Union Street store at around 7am on Friday.

They ordered the two female employees to open the safe, saying they would get hurt if they didn't comply.

The robbers then stole cash before apologising to the manager and making off.

There were no customers in the store at the time.

Walking past the branch of the popular bakery when it was cordoned off on Friday morning, was 70-year-old Wednesbury resident Maggie Dorsett.

Mrs Dorsett said: "There was a cordon and a squad car outside.

"I was worried and then someone else said it had been a robbery. It's very worrying that this has happened nearby."

Also shocked was ward councillor Elaine Costigan, who said: "It's terrible for this to happen in Wednesbury. There are CCTV cameras outside so I hope the police are able to catch them."

West Midlands Police confirmed that they are examining this CCTV as part of their investigation but anyone with information is urged to call 101. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or at crimestoppers-uk.org
