'We need answers': City councillor says explanation needed over Mark Duggan shooting that sparked Wolverhampton riots

The Metropolitan Police Force is 'duty bound' to provide a thorough explanation over the incident that sparked the 2011 Wolverhampton riots, according to a senior city cabinet member.

Mark Duggan's shooting by police five years ago led to a wave of violence across the country, with chaos hitting the streets of Wolverhampton as yobs trashed shops and set vehicles alight.

Councillor Milkinder Jaspal said it is 'extremely disappointing' that a detailed account of the role played by the Met Police in the incident has still not materialised.

His comments came in the wake of the BBC documentary, Lawful Killing: Mark Duggan, which looked at the events surrounding Mr Duggan's death.

Mr Jaspal said: "It is clear that we are not getting the full picture here, and I have to say I would have expected some clarity on the incident by now.

"The consequences of this man's death hit the city hard and caused problems that took a long time to clear up.

The Met declined to take part in the documentary, which featured dramatised footage of the shooting and interviews with Mr Duggan's family members and friends, as well as community activists.

There is still no consensus over whether the victim was carrying a gun when he was shot, while the IPCC says certain aspects of the Met's investigation into Mr Duggan are too sensitive to reveal.

Louise Johnson, who stood outside her Queen Street hair salon and protected it from attack during the August 9 riot, said: "The public suffered a lot because of the riots.

Councillor Peter Bilson said he hoped the police 'would always been transparent in matters as serious as this'.
