Watch the moment West Midlands Police came under fire from a barrage of fireworks

This is the shocking moment multiple fireworks were blasted straight at a van carrying West Midlands Police officers in a suburban street.

The van is repeatedly hit by the volley of shots, with others missing and hitting upstairs windows of houses on the street.

One teenager has been arrested, and another referred to the police youth offending team after the targeted attack on officers.

The van, carrying a number of local neighbourhood officers, pulled over by Balsall Heath Park after it was hit by the fireworks and pelted with eggs.

Police were called to the Taunton Road park following reports of anti-social behaviour in the area. It happened on October 22, but details and the video were only released today.

A boy aged 16 was 'spoken to in front of his parents' after being found in a search of the area after the attack. He is believed to be part of a group who fled when police arrived.

Last Wednesday, a boy aged 16 was arrested on suspicion of public order offences and criminal damage. He was released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Four other teenagers have been spoken to and further enquiries are being made to identify everyone involved.

Police also imposed a temporary dispersal order for the area which ran until yesterday, giving officers powers to move on groups of youths.

Sgt Andrew Lewis, from Sparkbrook, said: "This was totally irresponsible behaviour. I believe that a group of youths specifically targeted the police.

"Fortunately no-one was hurt but we could have so easily been dealing with something far more serious.

"We have been liaising with the local community who wanted us to take action against anti-social behaviour. A temporary dispersal order was put in place which meant that we could move on groups of more than two people.

"I want to make this clear, this type of behaviour is dangerous and unnecessary and we will be taking action against anyone involved.

"If anyone has any information that could help us then please contact me or one of my team."
