The three men aged 27,31 and 36 were treated by paramedics for serious injuries and taken to hospital.

An investigation was launched and an area of Goldthorn Hill has been cordoned off while forensic experts examine the scene.

Sergeant Carl Russell, from Wolverhampton's Violent Crime Team, said: "We are in the early stages of our investigation and continue to make enquiries to establish the motive behind the attack.

"We have spoken to several people who have told us that a car was seen to speed away from the scene shortly after the attack and we are appealing to anyone who may have seen this car to come forward with information.

"We would also like to speak to anyone who saw anything in the street at the time to come forward.

"Incidents of this nature are unusual in the area and we would reassure local residents that we are doing everything we can to locate those responsible.

"Officers will be in the area conducting house to house enquires and detectives continue to trawl CCTV for any clues.

"The injured men are in a serious condition and continue to be treated in hospital."

Residents living near the crime scene have today spoke of their shock after witnessing the police and ambulance crews descend on Goldthorn Hill.

One resident said: "There had been lots of noises and there had been shouting all night coming from the home involved.

"The next thing I knew I came out of my room at around 11.30pm to see what was going on and I could see loads of both police vehicles and ambulances.

"From the upstairs room I could see someone on the floor being operated on. There were around 10 paramedics around them.

"They had spotlights on the person on the ground and there was a couple of helicopters flying around as well.

"At that point I came outside and I was speaking with some of the police officers. They didn't say much but we just knew that there had been three people involved and that they were in a serious condition.

"This morning there was still police around and there was evidence markers scattered around until around 11am, when the road was reopened.

"Still now you can see blood on the road markings outside our house."
