Troy Harris, who had moved to the UK from Bermuda just five months before the sickening attack, had stayed in a hotel with 18-year-old Nyma Mamburay and her friend on May 2.

Harris, aged 25, left the Holiday Inn in Birmingham at around 4am with Ms Mamburay's friend without her knowing, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

The following day, when Miss Mamburay travelled to Newtown, Birmingham, to collect her friend, Harris launched his attack by grabbing her around the neck.

Prosecutor Hugh Williams, said: "Harris strangled her and said 'I am going to get rid of this baby. If you are pregnant you are going to have a miscarriage today. This baby is coming out of you'."

Harris, who had been living at Sedgley Road East, Tipton, then slapped Ms Mamburay to her face and punched her in the stomach four times 'with force,' added Mr Williams.

He then told her she must leave immediately or he would 'hurt' her, at which point her friend ran from a car to where she was standing.

As the pair tried to escape Harris then punched Ms Mamburay twice in the face causing her to black out. She spent the next two days in hospital.

Appearing at court via video link, Harris was sentenced to a total of 51 months in jail having previously owned up to the attack, several others and a burglary.

The Bermudian was warned by Judge Nicholas Webb he would probably be deported following his release.

The court heard Harris, who is a father himself, had a history of violence from the British island territory including the rape of a child.

Having moved to the UK in December last year his offending continued, including four separate attacks on his girlfriend, Samantha Davies. Mr Williams said all four incidents were following an argument between the pair.

Outlining one incident, he said: "They had been to visit Bicester Shopping Village but she had stayed in the car following an argument.

"When he returned to the car he had bought her a handbag, but she did not thank him and they argued again.

"On the drive back to Birmingham he called her a bitch and said she deserved to die. At Bourneville he grabbed her by the throat for 10 seconds until she couldn't breathe."

It was also described how Harris burgled his friend's flat in Sandon Road, Smethwick, taking £3,000 worth of property.

Christopher Loach, defending, said Harris had done so to pay for medication for his mother who suffered with sleep apnoea and depression.

Harris was sentenced on three counts of assault by beating, two of assault occasioning bodily harm and one of burglary.
