Iain Farrimond, aged 53, made no plea or declaration at Birmingham Crown Court after he was arrested at the home they shared in Battenhall Road, Redditch shortly before 6am on May 26.

His wife was taken to hospital with stab wounds, while Farrimond himself also suffered stab wounds which are not considered by police to be suspicious.

Farrimond appeared via video link from prison in Bristol and had his heavily bandaged right arm in a sling.

He has prosecuted in a number of high profile cases in Wolverhampton, including the trial of Ireneusz Bartnowski, who was jailed for life for the murder of Guiseppe and Caterina Massaro in 2012.

Judge Simon Drew asked Farrimond, representing himself, whether he felt a psychiatric report would be appropriate.

He replied: "I don't wish to incur my family with any costs. I don't want their suffering to be exacerbated any further."

Judge Drew ordered a report anyway. A plea and trial preparation hearing will be held on July 4 at Worcester Crown Court, though Judge Drew indicated it could be switched back to Birmingham if it is due to Farrimond's legal connections in the area.

His distinguished career often saw him quoted publicly, representing the CPS, on serious cases.

Other cases he worked on was gunman Kevin Fairweather, who was jailed after opening fire in West Bromwich High Street.
