Leon Robotham, 30, was nabbed after teaming up with others to take the high value motor from St Margaret's Road in Great Barr.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard how Robotham and his accomplices targeted the house for the pricey goods, before being followed by an unmarked police into a cul-de-sac, where he was cornered.

Prosecutor Howard Searle said: "They targeted the house and stole an Audi car worth £25,000 and other items totalling £3,000. All items were recovered, apart from the keys to the Audi.

"It was about 4.30am when the occupant of the house was woken. He looked out of the window and saw someone stealing his car. He phoned police straight away and they managed to track the car down within 10-15 minutes. The officers in the unmarked car followed the car, which was travelling in convoy with a Nissan Juke, until they came into a cul-de-sac, where officers 'surprised' them.

"The defendant was in the passenger seat of the Audi. The driver managed to escape. Robotham was arrested. The victim's watch was found on him when he was in custody.

Robotham, from Culmington Road, Longbridge, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft.

Judge John Wait told Robotham: "I accept you were recruited but you still played an active part in this burglary. You targeted this house because you knew there were high value goods."

He was sentenced to 28 months' jail.
