Warning to Sandwell residents as rogue traders 'intimidate' people into having work done
Rogue traders have been 'intimidating' people into having work done on gardens and driveways, prompting a plea for vigilance.
Trading standards officials say they have received reports from concerned residents and are urging homeowners to be alert to potential scams.
A crackdown is being launched by officers following a 'number of calls' from residents in Sandwell borough.
Sandwell Council Trading Standards are warning residents to be aware of rogue traders 'cold' calling in Great Barr and Hamstead areas.
Officers say they are concerned about 'potentially illegal practices including false representations, unreasonable charges, unfinished poor quality work and aggressive practices'.
Mark Beesley, Area Trading Standards Officer, said rogue traders are known to try the scams with the spring weather on the way.
"At this time of year, with the weather improving, we see an increase in rogue trader activity particularly around works to driveways, gardens and roofs," he said.
"Recent reports suggest that these rogue traders are using intimidating and aggressive behaviour in trying to persuade residents to agree to work.
"I urge residents to keep a particular eye on their older and vulnerable neighbours who may be having work done."
Officials have given advice following reports from residents into the practices used by rogue traders in the area.
They ask people to avoid agreeing to have work carried out on the spur of the moment when people knock on their door, have a clear idea of the work to be carried out and what you want to pay, get a number of quotations from traders.
They also advise making sure quotations are detailed setting out the nature of the job, the price, the components and the time taken to complete the work.
Homeowners are told not to hand over money in advance and get full contact details for workers.
Council leaders advised people to use the Tradewell in Sandwell scheme.
The scheme is not designed to approve tradesman, but all traders joining the scheme agree to abide by the schemes Code of Practice.
Sandwell Council leader, Councillor Darren Cooper, added: "Traders on this scheme have shown their commitment to treating consumers with care and respect, they will not go round knocking on doors looking for work. Successful businesses don't need to.
"I would urge homeowners who are thinking of getting any work carried out on their home or garden to use a trader from our scheme."
People are being urged to report suspicious activity to officials at Sandwell Trading Standards where they can also received advice though phoning 0345 404 0506.
