Wolverhampton-based Shaun Mhandu, aged 21, who was 'showing off' behind the wheel of his newly bought Renault Megane, was also spotted driving on the wrong side of the road and swerving from side to side in the vehicle.

When he was stopped by the officers he showed all the 'classic symptons' of being over the limit and he had to be helped to stand up, said Mr Christopher Gibbons prosecuting.

Recorder Barry Berlin told Mhandu: "You went the wrong way round an island and fortunately for the rest of us the police saw you."

Mhandu, a father of one, of Purcell Road, Bushbury, admitted driving with excess alcohol, dangerously and without insurance and he was further banned from driving for three years.

Mr Michael Pollack, defending, told Wolverhampton Crown Court Mhandu, a man of previous good character, was full of remorse for his actions. "It was a one-off stupid thing to do," said Mr Pollack.

"He made a mistake and he certainly will not make a mistake like this again."
