Thugs attack young couple outside Merry Hill on Valentine's Day

A young couple were attacked by a group of hooded thugs near Merry Hill Shopping Centre on Valentine's Day.

An 18-year-old man and his 17-year-old girlfriend were set upon as the walked along The Boulevard just before 10pm.

The man was punched in the back of the head, suffering a potential fractured jaw.

The girl was also hit, receiving a cut to her chin, in what is believed to have been an unprovoked attack.

They said a group of six or seven hooded teenagers were responsible for the violence. The man who was attacked is from Dudley and his girlfriend from Brierley Hill.

West Midlands Police said it has launched an investigation into what happened and has appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time and has any information to contact them.

Force spokesman Pete Edney said: "We can confirm this incident has been reported to us. "It is believed to have happened at around 9.55pm on Sunday near to Merry Hill.

"An investigation is underway and anyone with information should contact Force CID at Smethwick on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
