Romanian pickpocket gang admit West Midlands stealing spree
A gang of Romanian pickpockets have admitted stealing mobile phones from unsuspecting victims across Wolverhampton and the West Midlands.
The Birmingham-based gang snatched phones from customers in pubs, restaurants and shops throughout the West Midlands and beyond using a method known as table surfing.
The tactic sees thieves cover valuables left on tables with menus or leaflets before slyly swiping them.
The five-strong group carried out at least 24 thefts, including 18 related to table surfing, before being caught.
And, despite being arrested, the remorseless criminals have refused to apologise or reveal what they did with their loot.

The crimes took place across Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Oxford, Mansfield, Nottingham, Rugby, Loughborough, Stamford and Lutterworth between June and August last year.
Eight offences were committed in the West Midlands, including a mobile phone theft at Wolverhampton city centre Yates's in June and three crimes within a hour in Birmingham on July 9.
Among the Birmingham targets were the Fiddle and Bone pub in Bishopgate Street and Nandos in Five Ways.
West Midlands Police worked with officers from Oxfordshire to investigate the offences and bring the Romanian men before Oxford Crown Court on Friday February 5.
The gang were jointly charged with conspiracy to steal and will be sentenced in April.
Birmingham-based PC Mat Evans said: "These offenders were all professional thieves, part of an organised gang who travel all over the country to steal mobile phones.
"Although they refused to say what they did with their loot, we know from experience that stolen phones are often sent abroad where they can be sold on the black market for almost full value.
"I would advise members of the public to be very suspicious of anyone who approaches them in a cafe, restaurant or bar who is not a member of staff, and who tries to distract them with leaflets, greeting cards or menus.
"Keep phones in your pocket, not on show on the table, and always keep bags in view.
"These offenders have never apologised for what they did, and have been unrepentant throughout this investigation."
