Walsall Pc faces sack after assault conviction

A police officer based in Walsall is facing a misconduct hearing after being convicted of assaulting a member of the public after a fight in Walsall town centre.

Pc 2561 David Mitchison was on duty in the town centre when he was called to deal with a fight involving two people outside the Tap and Tanner pub on Darwall Street.

An onlooker approached the officer, who is in his late 40s, and was said to have been pushed in the chest by Pc Mitchison.

He fell to floor and suffered a cut to the head, which needed stitches.

It happened at around 6pm on March 9, 2014.

Pc Mitchison was found guilty of assault and fined £400 , ordered top pay a victim surcharge of £40 and costs of £300 and compensation of £200.

He lost an appeal against his conviction in October last year, and was ordered to pay £533 costs.

Pc Mitchison is now facing a misconduct hearing, likely to last five days, on Friday in Birmingham.

He could ultimately be sacked from the force.
