The 5ft plastic decoration was taken from the Co-op on Brownhills Road, Cannock.
Staffordshire Police said: "The Christmas decoration, which the store have used for many years, holds a great deal of sentiment amongst the staff and they wish for it to be returned."
Santa, whose mechanism is currently broken meaning he can not dance, was on a black circular base between the newspaper stand and the store's entrance when he was taken.
The suspect was spoken to by police outside and claimed a woman had taken Santa, and he would return it The man then left.
He is described as white, 6ft tall with a big build, aged in his 30's and clean shaven.
He was wearing a black woollen hat; green zipped jacket with a blue shirt underneath and dark-coloured bottoms and green gloves.
