Wolverhampton killer caught by West Midlands bobbies on the beat in Magaluf
A convicted killer from Wolverhampton who was wanted by police has been arrested in Majorca.
Ashley James absconded from Sudbury Prison in December 2010, while serving a 10-year sentence for the manslaughter of Uriel Johnson in Bilston.
He was arrested after being found and returned to serve the remainder of his manslaughter sentence, and was released on licence in September 2014.
He then set up home in Blackpool, but fled to Spain in breach of his licence conditions, which banned him from leaving the country.
He is now being held in Madrid, awaiting extradition to the UK, after West Midlands Police officers who had been sent to the region as part of an EU initiative helped with the probe.
Student Mr Johnson, 21, was stabbed in the heart and died 10 days later in hospital.
James, 30, of Parkfields, was arrested by two West Midlands Police officers in Magaluf.
James was jailed in July 2008 for the manslaughter of 21-year-old Mr Johnson in Bilston.
Mr Johnson was stabbed through the heart three days after a row at The Otter and Vixen pub in Bushbury.
James, aged 30, was arrested by the Spanish Civil Guard in Calvia and is back behind bars in Madrid awaiting extradition to the UK.
According to reports, West Midlands officers Pc Martina Anderson and Sergeant Brett Williams helped to track down James on the party resort. They were called to
a domestic assault on August 11 involving James.
The pair were responsible for taking statements from the victim and based on information she provided, the Civil Guard and British police launched
an investigation that led to the identification and arrest of James.
Pc Anderson and Sgt Williams went over to Spain to help with drunken holidaymakers.
After James escaped from Derbyshire's HMP Sudbury in December 2010, police carried out a number of raids on addresses in Wolverhampton and Blackpool.
During the 2008 row at the Otter and Vixen, rival groups of men squared up to each other.
Mr Johnson was on the opposite side of the argument to James, then of Hailes Park Close, Parkfields, and his cousin Errol Price, 25, of All Saints Road, All Saints.
Mr Johnson received a minor stab wound in the back and also had black eyes and facial injuries.
Three days later Mr Johnson tried to register on a construction course at Wolverhampton College's campus in Wellington Road, Bilston but found it closed.
James drove past and chased after him.
He was joined by Price, who found Mr Johnson and stabbed him through the heart in the street.
Price was jailed for life.
