She was one of several officers sent to reports of a break-in at Lyndale Drive, Wednesfield, where the keys to a Ford Fiesta were stolen and used to make off with the car at around 4am.

The vehicle was seen 10 minutes later in Neachells Lane, but when the officer, who is in her 40s, and a colleague closed in, the driver allegedly reversed into the pair.

The injured Pc is believed to have been in a police car when the stolen car was spotted. She and her colleague got out of their vehicle and went to open the driver's door, when the vehicle was put into reverse and struck her.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "She has been taken to hospital with serious leg injuries, whilst her colleague has also been treated for shock and minor injuries.

"A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and a 21-year-old man also arrested on suspicion of wounding; both are currently in custody helping police with their enquiries."

The car remained at the scene after reversing over a central reservation and striking a wall.

Insp Peter Haywood said: "This is being treated as a deliberate attempt to injure the police officer…she has suffered muscle damage and bruising but thankfully escaped more serious injury. We're waiting for a fuller update from the hospital.

"Several members of the public, including a lorry driver and two people commuting to work, came to the aid of the officers; I'd like to thank them for their fantastic support."

Police said Neachells Lane had been cordoned off whilst forensic experts continue to examine the scene.

Witnesses should contact 101.
