Gregory Sterling admitted assault at Wolverhampton Crown Court after butting another man at The Turks Head, in High Street, Wednesbury.

CCTV footage played in the court showed the 32-year-old butting the man with so much force that he falls over himself.

The two men were arguing in a corridor of the pub before Sterling launched the attack.

The man was also knocked to the ground and lost two of his teeth, the court heard.

The video also showed the two men taking their coats off before Sterling again punches the man.

Recorder Anthony Reynolds, who sentenced Sterling, said: "You launched a ferocious head butt and then punched the man.

"I don't know what happened that day but you were very drunk and completely over-reacted.

"You are in danger of wasting your life in prison.

Mr Edward Soulsby, prosecuting, said: "The victim said he did not start a fight with the defendant and that it was a totally unprovoked attack.

"He said he has had to have dental work done to sort out his two front teeth."

Mr Soulsby also told the court that Sterling , of Anslow Road, West Bromwich, had previously been sentenced to eight years in prison in 2002 and five years in 2007.

Mr Benjamin Nicholls, for Sterling, said: "Something must have happened for this to happen. There was a good deal of verbal argument before the assault. Something must have been said or done to cause him to react towards the complainant in this way."

The court heard that Sterling had also been found in possession of cannabis, for which Recorder Reynolds gave him no separate penalty. He was also ordered to pay a £100 victim surcharge.
