Jail for driver who killed man in hit-run Great Barr crash
An uninsured hit-and-run driver who killed a father of four has been jailed.
Majid Bashir was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison after admitting killing Stephen Chappell from Great Barr last year.
Bashir, aged 39, was driving his wife's Nissan Micra on the afternoon of January 30 when he hit Mr Chappell, 49, on Bordesley Green Road in Birmingham and left him for dead.
He was found lying in the road with serious head injuries and died in hospital a week later. Bashir dumped the car a few streets away but when officers traced the keeper, it led them straight to his door. He was arrested along with his wife who subsequently faced no further action.
After refusing to comment throughout his interview, Bashir was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving and causing death by driving a vehicle while the driver is unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured. Bashir, from Osborne Road, Sparkhill, who pleaded guilty at a hearing in October, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court.
Pc Paul Du Cros, from the Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Bashir is a selfish man who had no thought for the man he had hit. He only cared about himself and tried to get rid of the car and destroy any evidence that linked him to scene of the crash. He even unwittingly implicated his wife.
"Throughout his police interviews he refused to comment and only changed his plea to guilty when he realised we had enough evidence to prove his guilt.
"Mr Chappell was a loving grandfather and leaves behind two sons and two daughters. I hope the sentencing brings some comfort to the family as they continue to come to terms with their loved one's death."
