Birmingham prison officer admits drugs and sex shame
A prison officer who had a sexual relationship with an inmate has been warned that she faces jail over her actions.
Julie Turton, 53, became intimate with prisoner Danny King while working at HMP Birmingham and supplied cannabis to another, Birmingham Crown Court heard.
Turton, of Hembs Crescent, Hamstead, Great Barr, also communicated with other prisoners over mobile phone.
She admitted five counts of misconduct in a public office and one count of supplying a class-B drug during a short hearing at the court.
One of the counts admitted included bringing in a stereo system for use by one prisoner without authority. Turton wept after entering her pleas.
The offences occurred between November 2011 and May last year.
Serving prisoner Arteef Hussain, 25, who Turton had communicated with by mobile phone, also appeared before the court.
Hussain, presently serving a 10-year sentence at HM Oakwood, pleaded guilty to encouraging Turton to take cannabis into the prison.
His wife Shelah Arif, 25, of Foxdale Grove, Birmingham, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to convey cannabis into prison and possessing cannabis.
The prosecution in the case offered no further evidence to the court.
Turton and Hussain both denied a charge of conspiracy to convey cannabis and prosecutors discontinued the charge. The case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports to be prepared.
But Judge James Burbridge gave Turton a stark warning that she would likely be going to prison.
"You have pleaded guilty to serious offences of misconduct and at the moment I do not see any other sentence than imprisonment.
"However that will be a matter for the sentencing judge to decide."
Jonathan Barker, defending Turton, said: "She knows full well what is likely to happen to to her at the sentence hearing."
Turton was bailed until sentencing takes place on March 3.
