Torment of Maddison, 5, after being forced to watch as grandad mugged outside Wolverhampton home
'The first few nights she screamed in her sleep: "Ambulance, ambulance! Come help grandad!''
A five-year-old girl who was forced to watch as cowardly thugs attacked her grandad outside his Wolverhampton home on January 8 has been left tormented by the ordeal.
Today, 53-year-old Jeff Cutting spoke about the horrific attack for the first time and gave an emotional account of the toll it has taken on his relationship with little Maddison because she was afraid to be near him in the aftermath.
The pair were waiting for a lift at the bottom of Mr Cutting's block of flats in Hobgate Road, Heath Town, when the hooded robbers struck in broad daylight. They knocked him to the ground and repeatedly punched him while helpless Maddison could only scream for them to leave him alone.
The two men made off with gold bangles and chains Mr Cutting had been wearing, leaving him with a fractured shin, a fractured thumb and heavy facial bruising.
Today, Mr Cutting recounted the traumatic incident, which he said the family was still struggling to come to terms with. He said: "One came one way, the other came another way. All I remember is he turned around and said, 'We want your gold.'
"I said, 'I ain't got none.' They must have been watching me for a while. They must've been round the estate. They knew what they wanted because they knew what to go for. I don't feel like going out at the moment. It could take months, it could take years, but it's going to always be there. You don't forget a thing like this."
Maddison's mother Kelly Lee, who lives in the same block of flats as her father, said her daughter screamed in her sleep in the days that followed.
Fortunately, Oak Meadow Primary School pupil Maddison is now 'much better' around her grandad, who she is so close with they even share birthday celebrations.
In fact, proud mum Mrs Lee says 'all she wants to do is stay with her nan and grandad to keep them safe'. Police have recovered the stolen jewellery, which is worth around £4,500.
Officers describe both attackers as white, around 5ft 8in and aged between 20 and 25. One wore a black hoodie and the other a grey one.
