Residents were prevented from returning to their homes in Farndale Avenue, in Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton, while a police cordon was put in place.
They reported seeing police vans in the street and a police helicopter circling overhead. The cordon was put in place at around 2pm on Sunday.
Police later confirmed they had arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
He was taken into custody and quizzed before being released on police bail until a date in January.
