Officers were alerted to a break-in in Goldicroft Road in Wednesbury by neighbours who reported a group of men kicking down the door of a home and demanding cash from the homeowners.

A 34-year-old man suffered a serious head injury after being struck with the bar by the thieves and remains in hospital.

His 35-year-old brother and another man suffered less serious facial injuries – it is not clear how they were inflicted.

Police today revealed details of the crime which happened just before 8pm on Wednesday.

Two men, one aged 20 and the other aged 21, both from West Bromwich were arrested the same night and are being questioned on suspicion of robbery.

Alan Blakeway was one of the neighbours that saw the burglary take place and was the one who called the emergency services, he said: "He came knocking on the door asking for help, so I phoned the police and ambulance service.

"He was concussed and delirious and had an injury to his face.

"He said he had been hit by a metal bar three times.

"I saw four men running away with a TV and two remote control cars.

"I would imagine that everyone in the road is still in shock, we have had a lot of trouble in the street in the past."
