BMX break-in puts Wolverhampton holiday events at risk
Thousands of pounds worth of BMX bikes and equipment have been stolen from a high school in Wolverhampton, leaving a string of summer holiday activities under threat.
Thieves broke into a secure container at Aldersley High School in Pendeford, stealing 29 BMX bikes as well as protective pads and helmets. The bikes are used by children and young people at a BMX track at the Barnhurst Lane school.
A spokeswoman for the school today revealed 'a number' of events planned for the school break were in jeopardy.
They could be forced to be cancelled unless replacements can be found.
One of the school's generators was also stolen during the break in, which has left the school with a bill of more than £4,000.
Amanda White, business director for the school, said: "A number of events have been planned with the local neighbourhood partnership team to engage youngsters with activities at the track during the school summer holidays. It is now unlikely we will be able to hold these events unless we get replacement bikes."
The break-in happened at the school between July 18 and 22.
Sgt Stephen Perry, North sector co-ordinator for the city, said: "This crime is likely to have been carried out by someone with knowledge of the local area and the presence of the bikes. It is also extremely likely the offenders would have used a van or large vehicle.
"This crime affects the whole community and particularly local children and also at a time when the children would have used the facility to enjoy themselves during their school holidays."
Police today launched an appeal for anyone with information to get in touch with them. They can call Wolverhampton police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
