Faisal Hussain made the unplanned raid at the NatWest bank on Church Street, Oldbury, on March 22.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that during the robbery Hussain, aged 25, punched a businessman up to seven times in the face before getting away.

He then fled in a Mercedes which was able to evade police during a chase.

Mr Mark Rees, prosecuting, told the court: "The victim had got out the car and was carrying about £1,600 in coins in a plastic bag. He had looked around to see if there was anyone sinister lurking around.

"A colleague at the time had been carrying £13,000 in bank notes. They had gone to the NatWest bank to cash in the money and the defendant was at an ATM machine.

"When the victim entered the bank he turned around and saw the defendant who was stood behind but now with a hood pulled up over his head.

"The defendant tried to pry the money out of his hand.

"During this time the defendant didn't say anything and punched the victim six or seven time to the face.

"The handles of the carrier bag broke and the defendant picked up the bag of coins and ran away. The victim followed him and saw him get into a Mercedes and was able to note his number plate."

The court heard how police used the dog unit to track Hussain, who'd served time in custody for previous robbery offences, and his getaway driver.

He was found a mile away in Kelvin Way, West Bromwich. The money was recovered nearby. Hussain of Northcroft Way, Erdington, pleaded guilty to robbery. He was jailed for 27 months.
