Police swooped after residents living nearby complained about the strong smell coming from the property in Camp Hill, Wordsley.

Around 100 plants, some up to six feet tall, were found growing in four rooms and there was also a large quantity of dried cannabis.

Specialist lighting and watering equipment had also been set up in some of the rooms while another was being used as a nursery for smaller plants.

Police believe the factory had been operating for around three months. It had been rented out by the unsuspecting landlord, who police said knew nothing about the factory,

Pc Shaun Lyle said: "There is a mixture of seedlings, medium and large sized plants and buds from the plants which are drying out ready to go on sale.

"They were being grown in a number of different rooms. It looks like a professional set up.

"Members of the public were concerned about the strong smell emanating from the building and so we executed a warrant," he said.

Officers from Dudley's Community Action Priority Team carried out the raid yesterday morning.

Pc Lyle said: "The team was set up to address the concerns of the local community.

"We encourage residents who can smell a sweet, strong smell or see suspicious activity near them such as strange comings and goings at night to get in touch.

"Nine times out of 10 it will be something innocent but it could also be something more sinister. Drugs will not be tolerated."

No arrests have been made but police said an investigation was under way.
