Drivers hit 84mph at Halesowen crash spot
Drivers are ignoring warning signs and speeding along a busy carriageway at more than double the speed limit, despite a crash that killed a motorcyclist, police said today.
Officers caught 20 motorists travelling at speeds of up to 84mph in the 40mph stretch of Manor Way in Halesowen, in two short operations.
The speed checks were carried out near the Grange Road roundabout where 32-year-old motorcyclist Nick Foster died after coming off his bike on June 7.
Sgt Martin Hall said the checks were done after nearby businesses and residents had made the issue a priority at monthly meetings.
He said: "People just don't realise the danger they are causing, for themselves and other road users.
"There are big flashing signs telling people to slow down, but some are ignoring the signs and still going at extremely fast speeds. I'd warn them that we are here to stay and will be continuing speed checks along the road in the coming months."
A concern for police is motorists turning off the road for Halesowen Athletics Club, housing estates and businesses such as UK Pack Shot.
Company owner Mark Tudor said: "It can be terrible. People use the dual carriageway like a race track.
"Many times I have slowed down to pull off the road, and I have a vehicle coming up behind me screeching to slow down and avoid hitting me.
"Anything the police can do, to make the road safer, I'd welcome."
Motorists who are caught can appear at Dudley Magistrates Court for speeding two weeks later, facing a potential driving ban and large fine.
This month, Ryan Larner, aged 21, of Dudley Road, Rowley Regis, appeared at the court after he was caught driving at 85mph along Manor Way. He was disqualified from driving for 28 days and fined £80 after admitting speeding.
