Police were called to reports of disorder outside The Arena nightclub, formerly The Picture House, on Hagley Road at 3.23am on Sunday.

Three people were taken to hospital for treatment and one remained in hospital with stab injures. His condition is not thought to be life threatening.

The two other injured people were discharged from hospital yesterday.

A police cordon remained in place around The Arena yesterday, as well as around the Direct 2 Print Business Centre shop nearby.

Investigations were today continuing into the circumstances surrounding the disorder. The five arrested men aged 21, 23, 25, 28 and 31 have been bailed until the end of August pending further inquiries. Damien Hamilton awoke to find a blood on the doorway of his home on nearby Union Road.

As he opened his door he said he originally mistook the blood for kebab sauce, but as it became apparent it was blood he called the officer and forensics came to the scene.

Mr Hamilton said he also saw two vehicles, a Toyota and a BMW being taken away from the road yesterday on a low loader.

Professional photographer Geoff Cook, aged 43, who also lives in Union Street, said: "I heard normal noise that you would expect of people leaving the nightclub at about 2am. There was nothing that would have indicated that something was going on."

However, in the morning he woke to see a police cordon in place at the scene. Meanwhile, the street was littered with nightclub flyers and there was a bloody handprint on the door of a property in Union Street.

"It must have been quite a brawl because it covered quite a lot of street," he added.
