Alexander McEvoy stole jewellery from a pawnbrokers, took a £33,000 Mercedes from a car dealership and then lead police on a 70 mph chase at the wheel of a stolen Audi A4, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard yesterday.

The 26-year-old walked out of a pawnbroker shop in Queen Street, Wolverhampton on March 4 wearing a bracelet he had not paid for, said prosecutor Mr Zaheer Afzal.

On March 9, McEvoy drove off in a Mercedes C Class coupe from a dealership in St Johns Road, Stourbridge. He stole £49 worth of fuel next day from a petrol station in Halesowen Road, Netherton.

Next McEvoy took an Audi A4 and was spotted at the Stew Pony junction in Stourton on March 20, continued Mr Afzal.

The defendant sped off from police and led them on a five mile high-speed pursuit along the Kidderminster Road towards Wolverhampton before stopping at Stallings Lane, Kingswinford.

He denied claims the Audi had reached 100 mph.

Mr Oliver Woolhouse, defending, explained: "He is a man who has difficulty dealing with emotion and stress in his life and lost all hope for the future when his relationship deteriorated and broke down."

McEvoy from Grange Road, Dudley, who had previous convictions, pleaded guilty to theft, bilking and aggravated vehicle taking. He was jailed for two years and four months and banned from driving for three years.
