Joshua Butler dozed off, having gone through the night without sleep, and veered onto the footpath on the opposite side of a street in a Staffordshire village, killing 40-year-old Stuart Blackwell and his dog.

Butler – who was over the alcohol limit and had cannabis in his system – was today beginning a four-year prison term handed down at Stafford Crown Court.

The 22-year-old, of Scotch Orchard in Lichfield, did not stop after the crash in Streethay, which happened at 7.40am on December 14.

He returned later that morning but left the scene again when he saw ambulances, the court heard.

He also attempted to fix his shattered windscreen before handing himself in to police.
