Axe-wielding robbers steal cash from guard in Lichfield

Axe-wielding robbers stole a quantity of cash from a security guard as he left a convenience store. The officer was approached by two men as he left the Co-op store, in Ryknild Street, in Boley Park, Lichfield.

The robbers fled the scene on an orange, black and white scrambler motorbike which was found a mile away in Aspen Close.

No-one was injured in the drama at around 12.55pm yesterday and an investigation has been launched.

Staffordshire Police spokesman Peter Bate said: "A quantity of cash was stolen from a security guard as he left the Co-op shop."

He added: "One of them was wearing a helmet and the other wore a grey hooded top.

Midlands Co-operative Society spokeswoman Sara Leung said the safety at its stores for all was of utmost importance to the retailer.
