Andrew Robins, of Springfields, Rushall, stole the items from Tesco over a 10-month period Walsall magistrates court heard, but was rumbled when his rucksack was found filled with stock.

A police search of the 25-year-old's home later uncovered thousands of pounds worth of stolen goods.

The father-of-two, who had worked at Tesco for seven years, set off security alarms on the way out after finishing his shift on September 28.

Mrs Maggie Meakin, prosecuting, said £309 worth of stock was found in his rucksack and when police searched his home five days later they seized goods worth £6,709.

She said: "A manager of Tesco said to police the company were aware Robins did car boot sales at weekends and asked in the past whether he could have items the store was disposing of."

Mrs Meakin said Robins had admitted taking the items found in the rucksack but denied stealing all of the goods found at his home.

Robins admitted one charge of theft between December 2011 and October this year.

Miss Suki Thumber, defending, said Robins said some of the items found at his home had been bought from market traders but now accepted theft of the entire amount of the stock.

She said he felt "ashamed" and "remorseful" and had written a letter of apology to Tesco and tendered his resignation.

The case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report and Robins was unconditionally bail until Tuesday.
