The man, in his 20s, suffered serious multiple injuries and was taken to hospital.

It is believed his car hit a stationary vehicle and then the bus stop in Wordsley, Stourbridge, at around 2am.

Wordsley High Street is closed off as police recover the crashed car

The High Street was today blocked off by police while the blue Ford Ka was recovered.

West Midlands Police spokesman Billy Corrigan said: "We were called at 2.03am. Officers turned up to find a car had hit a bus stop.

"A man in his 20s was taken to hospital with multiple serious injuries. Part of the road is closed off."

A fire crew from Stourbridge attended the smash. Crew commander Simon Griffiths added: "There was a car initially in collision with a second car, it then appeared to lose control and crash into a bus shelter."

He added the back seats of the Ka needed to be removed to get the man out. Crews spent more than an hour at the scene. Terry Jones from Wordsley was taking his wife to work this morning when he came across the road closure.

He said: "The car was embedded in the bus stop. It looked like it had also been on fire. I had to go up through Brierley Hill which added three or four miles to my journey.."
