Police lorry tackling the criminals - video

An unmarked police HGV lorry is the latest tool helping to fight against HGV-related offences.

The lorry is kitted out with specialist crime-fighting equipment including cameras, recorders and number plate recognition.

Video Journalist Nicky Butler spent the morning in the unmarked HGV lorry with PC Nairn from Central Motorway Police Group, familiar to many from BBC series Motorway Cops. Within minutes of joining M6 southbound PC Nairn spotted a driver using his mobile phone.

But it's not only minor offences police are eager to tackle. Those thinking of targeting lorries for their load might be surprised to find a fully kitted police vehicle waiting to catch them in action.

Some 150 specialist officers will visit lorry parks, lay-bys, service stations and patrol 450 miles of motorway. Over the past three months they have seized £1.4 million pounds of stolen assets and recovered nearly £500,000 worth of drugs.
