Pc Scott Bradbury, aged 41, won commendations for his work hunting down thugs at football matches both in the UK and at games abroad.

But his 22 year 'unblemished' police career was left in tatters when colleagues smelled alcohol on his breath as he turned up for work drunk at Staffordshire Police HQ on September 26.

Tests revealed the officer had 144 mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Bradbury was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to carry out 100 hours' unpaid work.

He was also handed a three-year driving ban – as well as being ordered to complete a drink-driving awareness course and to pay £85 costs.

Bradbury, who pleaded guilty to drink driving, resigned from the force days before Wednesday's court case after admitting he had turned to alcohol.

He told Telford magistrates he was "embarrassed and ashamed" of his actions.

Miss Katie Price, prosecuting, said: "On September 26, the defendant arrived at work.

"Colleagues smelled alcohol on his breath. He was breathalysed. He made a full admission." The court heard Bradbury had won two commendations for his work picking out yobs blighting football matches in England and abroad. But a knee injury meant he was later restricted to desk duties in the control room.
