Co-op shutters bid to stop raids spree

Security shutters are to be installed at a Co-op branch under new plans to protect the store in the wake of a number of supermarket raids in the region.

The shop in Fallings Park, Wolverhampton, has been targeted in recent months.

Culprits have tried to smash their way through the side doors. The branch in Raynor Road is one of several stores raided in recent months, with some of the attacks carried out by masked men with hammers or axes. Branches affected include Rowley Regis, Tipton, Tividale and Wombourne.

As a temporary measure padlocks were installed at the Raynor Road store but bosses now want a more permanent solution to deter thieves.

A planning application to the city council from Bristol-based agents Evolve Design states: "The store has experienced a number of alleged burglaries through the side exit door which a padlock has now been applied to as a temporary solution.

"The new shutters will provide the opportunity to substantially improve the security of the store out of trading hours."

The shutters will be installed to entrance, exit and side doors. The council is likely to make a decision by November 21.

On August 7, cigarettes were stolen from the Co-op in Oldbury Road, Sandwell. Co-op in Highfields Road, Wolverhampton, was hit on August 13 while the Co-op branch in Unity Walk, Tipton, was hit on August 20.

On August 28, the Co-op in Dudley Road West, Tividale, was targeted.

Elsewhere, masked robbers raided the Co-op in Wombourne High Street in July.

Just days earlier, another Co-op in the village had been hit. The Giggetty Lane store was targeted by men who wore crash helmets.

Some stores have already stepped up security because of the raids, which have seen thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes stolen.
