Burglars grabbed computer equipment valued at £14,000 at a Wednesbury school. It is thought governors were in a meeting in another part of the school.

It meant that no alarms were set off during the raid at Tameside Primary School.

Thieves had smashed through a window, and a locked trolley containing 20 Mac laptops had been opened with a crowbar and the contents stolen.

Gary Linford, headteacher of the Price Road school, said: "Our best ICT equipment in the school has just gone."

It is believed that those responsible had attempted to get into the school days before the burglary, but were scared off after triggering alarms.

He said: "It seems as if we are being targeted, because the burglars tried to get in the week before and had done a 'recce' of the room."

Mr Linford said he believes that the burglars returned last Thursday evening and struck while the governors meeting, which ended at about 8.30pm, was taking place at the other end of the building.

"We are not going to be able to afford that for a while, and any money we have got spare we need to make sure we spend on keeping the school safe," he added. "It is really, really sad."
