Assessors praised the society for its approach to learning and development, delivery of appraisals and communication of business strategy. They also highlighted strength in leadership at all levels and the positive working environment this helps to create.

The West Brom has more than 700 staff spread across its West Bromwich head office and network of 37 building society branches. Its head office relocated to purpose-built premises at Providence Place in 2016, something which Investors in People noted as supporting growth and improving interaction between colleagues thanks to its open plan layout.

Neil Farish, head of Investors in People – Central England, said: "It is clear that the West Brom has a long-standing and continually evolving approach to optimising its most important asset – its people. The ethos that the best people produce the best results for customers sits at the core of the organisation's strategy. We are therefore pleased to award them our highly coveted Gold accreditation standard."

Investors in People is an internationally recognised accreditation held by 14,000 organisations worldwide. Its standard is considered to be the sign of a great employer, an outperforming place to work and a clear commitment to sustainability.

Jacqui Randle, the West Brom's HR director, said: "We secured our first Gold award in 2015 and this latest achievement shows that standards have remained consistently high throughout the business. We value our people enormously and want to attract and retain the best talent, something which is crucial if we are to succeed in our overriding goal of supporting the long term financial wellbeing of our customers."
