It follows several months of work, which has included turning the former Drop & Go car park next the terminal into a paid-for premium set-down car park.

The new drop off car park is about 400 metres away from the terminal. While the first 30 minutes are free charges mount up rapidly after that, at a rate of £5 for every five minutes.

It is intended for people dropping off passengers and has its own entrance on Airport Way.

The airport says the 135 space car park is 'just five to 10 minutes' walking distance from the terminal along a dedicated path. There is also a regular free bus service between the car park and the terminal.

Drivers who are picking up passengers are still being advised advised to use Car Parks 1, 2 and 3 at the airport, as the 30 minutes free drop off faciliity may not provide enough time if passengers are delayed through the arrivals process. Charges for Car Parks 1, 2 and 3 start from £4.90 for up to one hour.

An airport spokeswoman added: "We would again like to thank all passengers for their patience whilst these development works have been taking place."
