Midlands construction firm 'proud' as new council homes unveiled in Sandwell

Sandwell Council, with grant funding from Homes England, has delivered six spacious four-bedroom homes in Whitgreave Street working in conjunction with SWG Construction.

The local authoprity says it has built 527 new council homes since 2016 and is in the process of building over a hundred more, with over 60 expected to be completed before the end of March. 

The council also has plans to build a further estimated 133 new council homes by 2027, a potential total of around 769 new council homes, it says. 

Shaun Humphries, Construction Director at SWG, said the firm was "incredibly proud" to have built the project at Whitgreave Street. 

"This project not only provides high-quality, energy-efficient homes for families, but also reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability and community engagement," he said. 

"By integrating modern technologies like solar PV panels and electric car charging points, we’re setting a new standard for sustainable living in Sandwell.

"Every property is equipped with electric car charging facilities and solar PV panels, ensuring residents can enjoy eco-friendly living and reduced energy costs.

“Our focus on creating job opportunities and supporting local initiatives shows our dedication to building a brighter future – both for residents and the wider community.”

The development includes a landscaped communal area and convenient visitor car parking, making it ideal for families and guests to visit. In addition, the development features a new access road, bell mouth, turning head, pavements, street lighting and essential below ground drainage and car parking.

Councillor Vicki Smith, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Sustainable Development, said: “These stunning properties are part of our ongoing programme to build new, sustainable council homes across Sandwell to help meet the needs of our residents.

“With the ever-growing demand for council housing, we are expecting more than 60 brand-new council homes to be completed this financial year, which will provide high-quality, much-needed accommodation.”

Councillor Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Infrastructure, said: "I am delighted to hear that as part of the residential development SWG Construction has offered a range of opportunities to support the local community.

“Last November, two plastering students from Sandwell College were given the chance to gain hands-on experience on-site, and Tim Rouse, a former forklift driver, was recruited to join the construction team. Additionally, it’s great to see SWG welcoming Ben Hamon, an apprentice quantity surveyor, and Josh Yates, an existing quantity surveyor apprentice, to the project, providing valuable training and career opportunities for the next generation."
