The increase proposed by South Staffordshire Council would mean Band D households would pay £145.34 in 2025/26.

This bill is in addition to the council tax charged by Staffordshire County Council as well as police, fire service and parish council precepts.

And the £5 rise is the maximum allowed for district councils without triggering a referendum, a report to South Staffordshire Council’s cabinet said.

Cabinet members backed the proposed council tax increase, as well as the 2025/26 budget and Medium-Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) and Capital Strategy covering the next five years, at their meeting on Tuesday (February 11). The final decision is set to be made by the full council at a future meeting.

A report to the cabinet said: “The level of the council’s General Fund and Earmarked Reserves means that it is possible to produce a balanced budget for the next three years in an uncertain operating environment.

The council is alert to the risks in the current MTFS and will be considering alternative options that can be implemented as and when any of those risks materialise.

“The budget is judged to be prudent and deliverable and is therefore recommended to members for approval.”
