Council bosses say residents are set to feel the benefits of of a number of regeneration improvements this year, describing 2025 as a "transformative year for Sandwell", which they say will be marked by ambitious projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure, education and green spaces.

Under the linked schemes, a £2million improvement and extension project is due to be completed at the Millennium Centre in Friar Park. This initiative, being overseen by the Wednesbury Levelling Up Partnership, is designed to expand access to community services, offering residents better facilities and fostering a stronger sense of community.

"By enhancing the Millennium Centre, we aim to create a vibrant hub where people can gather, learn and grow together," said Councillor Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and infrastructure.

"Each initiative reflects a commitment to improving the quality of life of our communities and ensuring that residents have access to essential services and opportunities. A key ambition is to build upon the thriving business sector we have in Sandwell and make this an attractive borough for more businesses to invest in."

Further education and skill development projects under construction in the region include the Cradley Heath Skills Centre, which the council says is set to provide a state-of-the-art educational environment in partnership with Sandwell College. This facility will cater to a range of learning needs, equipping students with the skills needed for future success.

The Smethwick Connected scheme will also improve the cycle and pedestrian network allowing people to choose sustainable travel to move between the town centre, two railway stations, the new hospital and the Learning Campus.

"Further bolstering our educational landscape is the £18million Midlands Met Learning Campus, set to complete in November this year. This campus will serve as a pivotal training resource for healthcare professions, offering programmes from entry-level to advanced qualifications," added Councillor Hughes.

"It’s a significant investment in our healthcare future, ensuring that our community is served by well-trained professionals and that local people are enabled to secure future employment opportunities in the health sector.

"As these projects unfold, they will symbolise our commitment to fostering a community that is connected, educated and thriving. With the foundation of our 2024 Team of the Year award win, 2025 will undoubtedly be another successful year for regeneration in Sandwell, and a stepping stone to even greater achievements in the future."
