Work has been carried out to alleviate flooding issues at the Grenfell Road Allotments in Little Bloxwich near Walsall. A brook which runs through the site has been the source of flooding issues in recent times, particularly during heavy rainfall and snowfall.
Now with the help of Walsall Council’s corporate social responsibility programme, staff from Brownhills Asphalt Tarmac Ltd based in Croxstalls Close, in Bloxwich, used earth-moving equipment to dredge overgrown shrubs and silt from the brook last month.
As a result water can flow freely and mitigate against flooding for the foreseeable future at the site off Grenfell Road.
Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing at Walsall Council, said: “I want to say a huge thank you to Brownhills Asphalt Tarmac Ltd for getting involved with this project. “Previously, the brook running through this site swelled and breached its bank, leaving many plots unusable for weeks.
"For many, their allotment means the world to them and this valuable work will help protect them."
Brownhills Asphalt Tarmac Ltd director Dan Bartram said: “We are keen to work alongside local partnerships providing necessary services to help improve communities.
"Our company is well-known for making charitable donations and we are proud to work with Walsall-based companies and organisations including Walsall Council and Walsall Football Club.”
Improvements carried out at the site in recent years includes the removal of asbestos costing £2,000 in 2023.
