Team of 'problem solvers and fixers' at Wolverhampton finance firm set to branch out after city centre move
A Wolverhampton bookkeeping firm which started in the owner's spare bedroom says it's set for the "next chapter" after completing a move into new offices in the heart of the city centre this week.
WM Bookkeeping has grown from a tiny start-up formed at the beginning of the pandemic and now has a team of six working from the firm's new base in Tempest Street.
The move to new offices is set to help the firm branch out with the launch of a new venture offering specialist advice to small businesses on business protection and private healthcare for employees, and the company's new home is also primed to operate as a hub venue connecting clients with a range of support services including marketing, mental health support as well as learning and development and strategic planning services, founder Wendy Powis says.
"We describe ourselves as a team of problem solvers and fixers, our clients have said we're like a business's best friend," she said.
"It's not just about bookkeeping, it's about business support - so whenever these small businesses that have issues with insurance or HMRC or general day to day noise that takes the business owners away from trying to run their business, it's all of those things that we pick up and help manage for them to help concentrate on them doing what they do best."
Having taken the plunge to go self employed in 2020, Wendy started work in a spare bedroom at her home in the city before the need to take on staff saw the company expand into a converted garage in 2022.
The company got its first big client when Wendy started work on the account of one of her former employers.
"So many businesses really struggle in the early days but I was working 24/7 and that's a nice problem to have. So the business just took off and then I needed to take on staff which I found quite scary and a massive responsibility," she said.
"I was just so busy straight away. Literally straight away I'd got my biggest client and the other people I'd worked with in the past when I'd been employed started coming to me and saying 'can we take your services' so I guess for me it's all the people I'd met along the way - it's not luck that my business took off almost overnight, it's all the hard work along the years.
"Right now it's all about the growth and we're in a fortunate position because we're getting a lot of referrals coming through and likewise we refer a lot of our clients to other professionals, so we're now starting to act as a business hub because of all the areas that we can cover off. It's really just about helping people, a lot of us are people pleasers, we're genuine people and we get more out of helping people and the satisfaction of doing a great job."
