Demand rising for engineering skills

As things begin to feel more normal, the huge growth in the engineering construction, and engineering industry as a whole, is fuelling demand for skilled workers, creating jobs and pushing up wages.

One training provider and Ladder for the Black Country member has a host of opportunities to help the next generation of budding engineers.

As part of its ongoing investment, PTP Training part of the BCTG Group raining is offering fully funded engineering traineeships and apprenticeships to young people and adults from its engineering department, based in Intown, Walsall.

Programmes include traineeship and apprenticeship courses in many engineering skills, to include lathe and milling machining, fabrication/platers, welding, pipefitting, business improvement and lean manufacturing operatives.

Courses accommodate those who are new to the industry, as well as established workers wanting to upskill and gain essential industry licences like CSCS cards. These will be achieved through completion of the apprenticeships.

Disciplines

Commercial courses are also available in the above disciplines, where individuals may require a change of direction from their usual career, or to gain the necessary qualification for access to sites not just in the UK, but around the world.

Individuals can gain a Level 2 diploma, certificate or award, and then move onto an Advanced Level 3 qualification. A wise commitment as higher skills mean higher earnings.

Engineering manager Andrew Bradbury said: “BCTG Group is one of the largest independent training providers in England. Each year we train over 10,000 young people and adults in a range of vocational and technical skills. With engineering and engineering construction in such high demand and with a diminishing number of trained personnel due to its ageing workforce the need for training is increasing considerably.

"We have a significant number of job opportunities for apprentices. The impact of Brexit and the constant demand for new power generation and technical skills, means there are lots of well-paid jobs for skilled engineers and engineering construction workers."
