Ladder helps find more roofers

Not many young people leave school thinking “I want to be a roofer” – unless they have a family member or colleague already in the trade.

Roofing is a huge part of the construction industry and doesn’t include just the tiles you see on your homes, it also includes surfaces such as flat roofs, waterproofing, sheeting and cladding.

Juniper Training, which has four training centres within the Black Country, has partnered with Walsall-based SPV Group to provide a training facility that provides 16- to 19-year-olds with an opportunity to learn the skills needed to progress onto a Level 2 roofer apprenticeship.

The 30-week training programme offers young people a Level 1 certificate in construction, tuition in maths and English if needed and training in abrasive wheels, asbestos awareness, fire safety, manual handling and working at height.

They also learn the various disciplines in roofing and sit the CSCS test prior to being taken on as an apprentice with one of the many roofing contractors we are currently working with.

These include SPV Group, RS Miller, Dudley MBC, Rio Asphalt and Central Roofing.

Sam Broomhall, business development manager at Juniper Training said “We are so incredibly pleased to announce Muhammad Farhan, one of our Roofer Apprentices has been awarded the NFRC young roofer of the year award.

“Mo started on our first Building Futures cohort in partnership with SPV Group, in August 2019.

"Mo was the first to progress onto our roofer apprenticeships in March 2020 and now, 12 months on, he’s winning the young roofer of the year award.

"We’re really proud of Mo and the progress he’s made.”

Juniper is now recruiting for its August intake and has limited spaces available.
