The initiative for Stourbridge was launched by the town's MP Suzanne Webb in the Houses of Parliament.

She has invited the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to same a meal from the winning entry.

People are being asked to nominate their favourite takeaway in a Facebook poll that closes on March 8.

This a way of saying thanks to those businesses that have stayed open for people during the pandemic.

Speaking in parliament via Zoom, Suzanne, said: "Whilst hospitality has had to close their doors, in true Black Country spirit many of my venues have been truly entrepreneurial and now offer a great takeaway service.

"To celebrate this entrepreneurial spirit, I am launching a favourite takeaway competition in my constituency today.

"Will the Prime Minister join me in launching this competition and also in a takeaway from the winning entry when he’s next in wonderful Stourbridge, he’ll receive a warm welcome and I’m happy to throw in a trip on the country’s finest shuttle which I hope to soon see called the Stourbridge Dasher."

In reply, Mr Johnson said: "I congratulate my honourable friend for what she is doing to champion takeaways in Stourbridge.

"I thank her very much for her initiative and I look forward to visiting the hospitality sector in her constituency as soon as possible."

Speaking after the meeting, Suzanne said: "This is a really good way for all of us to acknowledge that during these difficult times a little bit of normality has stayed with us when we’ve picked up the phone and ordered a takeaway delivered to our doors.

"So, please go to the pinned post at the top of my Facebook page and get voting for your favourite takeaway."

The top takeaway, or any other business that has offered takeaways during the pandemic, will be able to join Suzanne for lunch at the Palace of Westminster when restrictions allow.
