In line with the latest purchasing managers index figures the Dudley-based company experienced an increase in sales of 110 per cent in June compared to the previous month.

Its orders booked have also increased by 178 per cent while fleet orders for vehicles accessories, particularly hardtops for pick-up trucks, placed in this period, but will count in July figures, are also on the increase.

According to the latest PMI statistics released on July 24, UK manufacturing has experienced a fast rise in production with UK private sector firms indicating a solid rebound in new order volumes.

Truckman resumed production of its range of commercial hardtops at the start of May and maintained suitable stock levels of its leisure canopies to meet pent-up demand from its customer base, which includes car manufacturers, dealership networks, fleet operators, SMEs and private vehicle owners.

In the first week of June the business experienced a doubling of calls to its contact centre with an immediate increase in sales to 70 per cent of its usual early summer activity, which grew substantially as the month progressed.

Mike Wheeler, executive chairman of Truckman, said: “We have experienced the start of a V-shaped recovery at Truckman and our performance is a strong reflection of what is being reported by the PMI figures. As we are experiencing a somewhat government-made recession to protect the nation from Covid-19 there is pent up demand, which we have been quick to respond to and seen our sales increase rapidly.

“There are still challenges ahead, but we are confident that the industries we support, such as utilities, construction, rail and agriculture, along with the off-highway sectors that are involved in the major infrastructure projects the government is bringing on line, will continue to invest in their vehicle requirements. Our established relationships with original equipment manufacturers and dealership networks will also be key to maintaining a strong flow of sales as we approach September and new 70 registration plate.”
