Barclays is to shut its Wednesfield branch this summer.

Bosses made the decision after figures showed only 258 people use the High Street branch exclusively – with 50 per cent using others.

Jane Stevenson, MP for Wolverhampton North East, has called on the bank to keep it open.

It is due to close on June 12, with the nearest branches in Queen Square and Lichfield Street in Bilston.

The MP said: “Whilst banking has changed significantly over the years, there are still many people in Wolverhampton North East who rely on their local bank branches to conduct their everyday banking needs.

“This decision by Barclays will have a negative impact on elderly and vulnerable residents in Wednesfield. I am seeking an urgent meeting with Barclays to urge them to keep the branch open.”

“Local services such as these are vital to the community, so I very much hope that Barclays will reconsider its decision.”
