Bosses at Metro Bank, which will be open seven days a week and until late, aims to help bring a “personal” aspect back to banking.

And it decided to pull out all the stops to prove it was offering a different approach to traditional banks, with a DJ, free manicures and face painting.

The move has seen a former mobile phone shop building transformed, with 25 jobs being brought into the city.

The opening also comes after Metro Bank launched a drive-thru branch at intu Merry Hill in September.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, who described it as “vote of confidence” in the city, cut the ribbon alongside MPs Jane Stevenson and Stuart Anderson and Metro Bank’s Ian Walters.

The site, off Dudley Street in the city centre, has a completely new facade, with ATMs and bright red and blue colours.

Ian Walters, managing director of retail and business banking, said: “It’s been a huge privilege and we’re all incredibly excited.

“It’s great to see the city is being transformed and being a part of it is humbling and exciting.

“We think it’s important customers have a choice and we also think people enjoying talking.

“They like people who smile and want to help you out.

“We want to provide a great service and having a site is really important because people value that.”

Mr Street, who described himself as a “failed banker” during time working for Natwest, said: “It’s truly brilliant and I’m so impressed they made it happen.

"It was still a building site when I last walked past – and it is fantastic now. Metro Bank is making a big commitment to the city.”
