Demand from chocoholics has flooded in from as far away as New York and the Orange County for the Twin Peak bar, which is designed based on the “twin peaks” of The Wrekin and Ercall hills.

The company said the 180g bar – bigger than its Swiss counterpart – sent Britain “barmy” and more than 40 per cent of the limited edition bars have been sold.

It is being made at Birmingham’s Walkers Chocolates Limited and is expected first 500,000 are expected to sell-out by the end of December.

Some chocolate lovers are taking to eBay to purchase the bar, with some being sold for fifteen times its original value of £1.

Poundland trading controller, Chris Burns, said: “It’s Twin Peak-tastic to know our customers love the new bar.

“We’ve created a quality bar that’s real value-for-money, and it’s great to see shoppers have noticed.

“My advice? Get to store and try one soon – these limited-edition £1 bars are perfect for Christmas stockings, Secret Santa gifts or just to leave for Santa on his busy night!”

Surprisingly, the launch of Twin Peaks has not impacted Toblerone sales at all, with the Swiss bar proving to be just as popular with customers purchasing both bars for their consumption.

After the limited-edition bar is gone, Poundland will revise the shape so it better represents the outline of the Wrekin and Ercall hills – the inspiration behind Twin Peaks – as a British alternative to Toblerone, offering 30g more chocolate.

Store manager of Wolverhampton Poundland, Gary Blakemore, which has received 500 of the bars, said when the bar was first released: “There have been many products like this that have gone down fantastically well with the customer,” said Mr Blakemore.

“All the feedback has been positive. If anything, they have been looking forward to it more because they’ve had to wait.”
