The company, which already employs almost 6,000 people, has 4.5 million customers across the Midlands and north and mid-Wales and serves them from bases across the area in which it operates.

Jobs are available in repair and maintenance and engineering teams as well as technical administration and network support roles.

Liv Garfield, Severn Trent chief executive, said: “We know how important it is for our customers to have a shower in the morning and to wake up with a freshly brewed cuppa, and our teams work hard every hour of every day to make that happen.

“They’re doing a cracking job working hard to keep everything working perfectly but we need even more people on board to make our service even better for our customers. So, alongside the teams who work to keep our network working perfectly, we also need people who can change our pipes, create a new connection or carry out major work to improve and update our supply network.

“Our teams are absolutely brilliant and this is a great chance to join an awesome company, while also making a real difference to millions of people.”

The company hopes that at least some of the applicants already have the right skills so they can hit the ground running, but the company will also look at training up the right people. Severn Trent supplies 1.9 billion litres of drinking water each day which is the equivalent of 751 Olympic-sized swimming pools of drinking water every day. That’s also 78m litres of water every hour of every day.

The company collects around 30,000 litres of waste water a second, every day.

Its network of pipes is 49,000km long for water and 93,000km for sewers, which is enough pipes to go round the Earth more than three-and-a-half times. It looks after more water pipes than any other company in England and Wales and he longest sewer network outside London.
